What is TOGAF?
TOGAF can be defined as a framework which is used by both organizations and an individual. This framework provides a set of principles and guidelines that will help in the growth of an Enterprise Architecture organization.
If this course is done by an individual, and the individual passes an exam based on TOGAF, then the individual will be designated as an Enterprise Architect.
There are some strict rules that are needed to be followed by an organization while following the guidelines of the TOGAF framework to develop the Enterprise Architecture of an organization:
- An organization that has no experience in the Enterprise Architecture field should follow the TOGAF framework guidelines only with an agreement that they will adopt the TOGAF framework as the prime framework for their Enterprise Architecture.
- If the TOGAF framework is used by a developed organization, then, they should not mix any other principles with the TOGAF principles.
A bit of TOGAF’s history
The TOGAF framework was developed by the Department of Defence in the U.S.
The main motive of this framework was to work on the Technical Architecture Framework, but later on, this framework was given to The Open Group family. Since then, The Open Group started working on the further development of this framework.
The whole development work was done with the help of the Government, and after several years of effort and over a million dollars of expenditure, the TOGAF version 1 was launched in the market in the year 1995.
Since then, TOGAF started gaining popularity amongst several organizations. And now, the reports and surveys claim that the TOGAF framework is used by 80% of Enterprise Architecture organizations.
What does roadmapping with TOGAF 9.2 suggests?
First and foremost, it is important to understand the meaning of roadmap.
A roadmap can be defined as a strategic tool that can help to guide the development planned for any product, organization, or even an individual.
A roadmap is used to successfully drive strategic initiatives.
When it comes to an understanding of the roadmap, the most significant thing one should remember is that it is a strategic document but not a simple document with a list of plans in detail.
The roadmap is a high-level strategy that focuses on strategizing plans to acquire goals of a tough project. As explained before, in the context that a roadmap isn’t something that captures a list of plans, but it includes a whole lot of discussion, storytelling, and specification of plans that can be implemented in a certain way to push any organization to another level.
Coming back to the TOGAF standard, the TOGAF standard gives a roadmap for the development of Enterprise Architecture.

According to TOGAF standard, a roadmap can be defined as a package of assets which may include:
- A Work Package Portfolio
- Gaps, Solutions, Dependencies and Transition Architecture
- In some cases, there may be business value bubble chart
- Implementation Factor Assessment and Implementation Recommendations
- Date Properties and components
- v0.1 of the Implementation and Migration Plan
